SJHH / Health Services/ Chest Program/ Malignant Pleural Effusion Clinic

Malignant Pleural Effusion Clinic

What this program does...

The goal of the Malignant Pleural Effusion Clinic (MPE Clinic) is to provide comprehensive management and improve the care of patients with pleural effusions, and is a collaborative effort between the care providers of the Lung DAP, FIRH (SJHH), Juravinski Cancer Clinic (HHS), HNHB LHIN, the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and Palliative Care.

This is an outpatient clinic designed to minimize hospitalizations, emergency department visits and reduce time patients spend away from home, family and friends.  A team of health care professionals including physicians and nurses work closely to help relieve symptoms associated with pleural effusions such as shortness of breath, cough and chest discomfort.

Services at this clinic include expedited assessment within 1-2 weeks of referral diagnostic evaluations, novel therapeutic techniques including tunneled pleural catheters, close follow and community nursing support, patient education and coordination of care with multiple specialists.

How this program helps...

The ultimate advantage is that patients can benefit from a better quality of life using these innovative therapeutic techniques delivered in an outpatient and home setting. The main measure of our program’s success is in relieving symptoms, improving quality of life and shifting care for patients to the home setting.
