Swim for the Cure for Cancer Research
Swim for the Cure for Cancer Research
Every day in Canada, 62 people are diagnosed with breast cancer, according to Canadian Breast Cancer Statistics. Debbie Bang, Manager at St. Joe’s and her husband take strides annually to help raise funds for cancer research by organizing the Swim for the Cure.
Debbie was faced with the reality of breast cancer at 17 years old when she found a lump in her breast; but fortunately it was benign. Since her personal scare, cancer has affected both sides of her family, thus, the reason for the relay. Debbie mentions this swim is not for beginners, and those participating will swim 2.8 km (8 miles) as well as a relay, which could take as long as 7 hours. In order to participate, swimmers need to ensure they are prepared and registered for this event.
Debbie and her husband are proud to report that this is the 15th edition of the endurance and relay swim with hopes of raising $15,000 and about a dozen swimmers. To date, the organization has raised $208,000 with 135 different swimmers!
“The swim is about setting a goal and believing it is achievable,” Bang said. “Our crew, supporters and the other swimmers make it possible for us to finish; just like those journeying with breast cancer.”
This year’s event takes place on Saturday, July 25, 2015 and begins at the Severn River Swift Rapids Lock 43 and ends at Big Chute Lock 44. Severn River is 11/2 hours north of Toronto, off Highway 400.
