Celebrating National Occupational Therapy Month!
Closing the button on a shirt, tying the laces of a shoe or even the action of brushing teeth are daily routines most of us don’t think twice about. It’s when those life skills become tasks too challenging to perform, that our lives will depend on the expertise of an Occupational Therapist (OT). It’s a profession that can help restore pride and independence to our patients at St. Joe’s.
Tackling these everyday activities is essential to our health and wellbeing. When something happens to inhibit our abilities, OTs teach various strategies, such as breaking down tasks into different steps, to help our patients achieve success.
There are many areas of specialty within the OT discipline. Deborah Weusten-Smith is an OT with the inpatient Mood Disorders Program at St. Joe’s. “What is not as widely known is that we are also trained in psychotherapy and educational programming,” said Weusten-Smith.
“We work with people of all ages, in different environments, with family members, the community and within different social components.”
