Monthly feature: William J. Walker and the Physician Team: Drs. Clara Lu, Achieng Tago, Tobi Olaiya and Curtis Sobchak 2022 Mission Legacy Award winners
Late November we celebrated the 2022 Mission Legacy Award ceremony at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. The Mission Legacy Award recognizes key individuals and departments / teams who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to the legacy and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, St. Joseph's Health System, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and its Foundation.
Each month we will feature a few of the award recipients to share a bit more about how they have made meaningful contributions throughout their time with our health care organization.
This month we feature William J. Walker and the Physician Team of Drs. Clara Lu, Achieng Tago, Tobi Olaiya and Curtis Sobchak.
In June 2014, William J. Walker began his three consecutive three-year terms with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Directors. At that time, he was a grateful patient of our Hospital. Over the next nine years, he would become an advocate for the role philanthropy can play in driving healthcare innovation; he would serve on the cabinet for the largest fundraising campaign in the history of our Hospital (helping to raise more than $87 million); he would lend his legal, finance and governance acumen to our organization, and pen opinion pieces in support of our Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bill, as he is now fondly known, is a steadfast St. Joe’s supporter in every way. |

Clara Lu, Achieng Tago, Tobi Olaiya and Curtis Sobchak are honouring the Sisters’ legacy through their commitment to improving Race and Ethnicity-Based Data Collection at St. Joe’s. Beginning as a research project to compare race and ethnicity data with COVID case counts, their work highlighted a gap in the information collected. They have since established data collection to align with provincial and national standards, while continuing patient care through clinical rotation placements. |
In 2022, the following groups / individuals were awarded:
Julia Baxter, Dr. Azim Gangji, Brenda Helpard, Dr. Anthony Kerigan, Monoclonal Antibody Clinic Team, Physician Team of Resident (Drs. Clara Lu, Achieng Tago, Tobi Olaiya and Curtis Sobchak), Cathy Pracsovics, Claudia Rodrigues, Frances Szypula, Transplant Team, Stephanie Trowbridge and William J. Walker.
A sincere thank you to each of the past and present award recipients, their hard work and dedication to our organization and the patients we serve is truly appreciated by our staff, patients and families.
Check back next month as we take a moment to highlight each one of the 2022 award recipients. The Transplant Team will be our next feature for the month of October.
