Medical Step Down Unit Level 2 ICU

What this program does...

The Medical Step Down Unit is a Level 2 critical care unit that specializes in and is designed to care for critically ill patients who require intensive care and continuous monitoring. The 16-bed unit provides a full range of critical care services with the exception of invasive ventilation.  We have the capacity to care for a diverse patient population that includes medical and cardiac patients.

The SJHH Medical Step Down Unit Level 2 ICU provides evidence-based specialized care to adult patients through state-of-the-art monitoring systems, critical care technology, and professional expertise. 

Your Care Team

We have a highly skilled interdisciplinary team which includes Registered Nurses, Acute Care Physicians, Respiratory Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Speech Language Pathologists, Registered Dieticians, Unit Clerks, Social Workers, Volunteers, Chaplain and a Unit Manager who work together to provide compassionate and individualized patient and family care.

Referral

Patients are admitted to the Medical Step Down Unit Level 2 ICU unit from the following:

  • Emergency Department
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • General Ward Units
  • External Hospitals

Visiting Hours

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton wants to ensure that all visiting family and friends feel very welcome at our Hospital and included in the care of our patients when appropriate. To allow greater access for our visitors, we have ended the concept of specific visiting hours. Therefore, visitors are welcome at any time on all Inpatient Units at each Campus. 

We ask that you do not bring any valuables with you as the hospital cannot be responsible for lost or stolen personal items.
